WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF A CONSULTANT PHARMACIST?

A licensed consultant pharmacist provides expert clinical guidance to healthcare providers on the appropriate use of medication in a variety of practice settings. This role includes collaborating with members of the health care team to promote safe and effective drug therapy, and to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

Consultant pharmacists perform medication regimen reviews based on a patient’s health history to evaluate the appropriateness, safety, benefits, risks, and cost-effectiveness of medication therapy. The consultant pharmacist may provide alternate treatment options, as well as medication management guidance including drug monitoring, documentation, administration and storage.
